NEW Double Coated method:
With this revolutionary method coating takes place in two consecutive coating procedures. In the first hydrophobicity is achieved and in the second lubrication characteristics are added. Both coatings follow the same process described as: ?particle surface modification?.

Double Coated

Proudly we announce the new surface modification method that is called Double Coating (DC). With this method not only CaCO3 filler hydrophobicity is achieved but also its lubrication effect is enhanced.

Double coating procedure:

The procedure of double coating takes place in two stages:

1. In the first stage due to high temperature of 120o C ? 130o C the maximum possible rate of the chemisorption (chemical strong bond at the calcium carbonate structure of the stearic acid) is achieved. In this way, free stearic acid is significantly minimized.

2. In the second stage the uniformity of the surface treatment of each particle of calcium carbonate is improved thus providing effective lubrication and dispersability in the final application.

Our coating method offers unique and special treatment thus provides strong bond between the surface of Calcium Carbonate and Stearic acid with many advantages during production.

Advantages:

Other advantages* of Double Coated Microfill?s Fillers over normally coated fillers (including the equivalent ones of competition) can be found below:

  • Oil / Plasticizer absorption reduction of at least 12%.
  • Improved dispersion. Faster and more efficient mixing.
  • Absence of agglomerations.
  • Glossier end product surfaces: The gloss can be improved by at least 20% without the addition of any special purpose additives.
  • Capability to increase the PHR of CaCO3 by at least 5%.
  • Easier flowing in hoppers and conveying screws.
  •  Improved output rate (can reach 16% more output retaining the properties of the end product).

* Values can vary based on particular applications, formulations and equipments.

Benefits:

In the chart that follows we summarize the major benefits that one can enjoy by using the new DC grades.

Raw Materials

Calcium Carbonate

Calcium Carbonate is the main chemical substance of a white mineral called limestone.
The deposits of limestone can be found in three forms: chalk, calcite and marble.
The raw material Microfill K. Zafranas S.A. uses has the advantage exceptional chemical purity as it contains at least 99,7% of Calcium Carbonate. It is also superior in whiteness and has a low yellowness index due to the very white deposits of Calcium Carbonate in Greece.
Below one can read more about the advantages and disadvantages of the three forms of deposits

a. Microcrystalline CaCO3 (Chalk)
Originated from the shells of nanofossils. The deposits are on flat shelves

Advantages
? Easily processed
? Low mean size

Disadvantages
? Off White Brightness
? Increased Yellowness
? Increased absorption
? Poor rheology.
? Absorbs humidity during storage.

b. Calcite
It is of biogenic origin, but more compact than chalk

Advantages
? High Brightness.
? Low Yellowness.
? Low absorption.
? Easy dispersion.
? Good Rheological Properties.
? Increased hiding power.

Disadvantages
? Increased Cost of Production.
? Expensive Processing Installations.

c. Marble
It is formed when chalk or calcite crystallize under great pressure

Advantages
? High Brightness.
? Low Yellowness.
? Low absorption.
? Easy dispersion.
? Good Rheological Properties.
? Increased hiding power.

Disadvantages
? Unstable Brightness
? Increased abrasion.
? Increased Cost of Production.
? Expensive Processing Installations.

Talc
The mineral talc is a hydrous magnesium silicate. Its main characteristic is the shape of its crystals, which are macrocrystaline. The aspect ratio of these crystals is 11:1. It is this shape that gives unique mechanical properties to the materials it is applied, since it renders them with extreme elasticity. Talc has also the advantages of fragrance retention, luster, purity, softness and whiteness. Other important properties of talc -when used in the industry- are chemical inertness, high thermal and low electrical conductivity, high dielectric strength and oil and grease adsorption.
